Growing Up in Rock Falls Park
1953-1980
Trudy Gumpp Maffioli

"I lived in an amusement park and thought it was the normal thing to do.

Pap and Grandma lived in the first house as you went into the park.  My parents' house was farther back in the park.  I loved living there!  I was brought home from the hospital to that cottage and called it home for 27 years."

Read more of Trudy's memories and view family photos from her collection.
Additional photos from the Gumpp and Crouch family collection are available in the gallery under Rock Falls History.

Thanks, Grand Dad

Garnet Stoughton Potter

"Stoughton's Beach had its small beginning when grandad noticed campers on the lower end of his farm by the creek.

He discovered they brought their children fifty miles just to swim and get out of the hot city.  He ran an advertisement in the city paper for campers to camp all summer for five dollars.  He mowed the grass in that lower field and built a small building.  He then had mother train my older sister to sell pop and candy."

Read more of Garnet Stoughton Potter's memories of her grandfather, Sol Stoughton, and the park he created.
Special thanks to Bunny Potter Fisher for sharing her mother's words and to Sherry Stoughton Schumacher for making these materials available.
